I love nothing better than making things. I also love fixing or repurposing things. For me finding ways to bring items back to life gives me a lot of happiness. Working with aluminium coffee pods has unlocked a whole new medium to get creative with.
Finding beauty in the everyday items
What do you think when you see a used coffee pod? I’m guessing you probably see it as rubbish – it’s served its purpose; the coffee has been drunk and now the pod is ready to be thrown away (either in the bin or to be recycled). However when I see an aluminum pod, I see potential.
Nowadays there are numerous brands offering pods in a wide range of vibrant colours, interesting patterns, smooth metallic surfaces and endless possibilities for shaping.
Each pod offers an opportunity to create something extraordinary from the ordinary, and that’s what inspires me.
Not just jewellery
The other day, I came home to notice one small, yellow rose in the flower bed. How it has survived this far into winter I am not sure! The rose ignited something in me and I wondered if I could make an everlasting rose from coffee pods. So over the next few evenings, I began playing around with the aluminium, trying to cut and shape them so that they resembled a rose. I don’t think I have ever looked at a rose so closely! At first they looked a bit surreal and fake but by the sixth rose, I was beginning to feel that they looked more realistic. The petals, leaves and stalks began to look more organic than rigid aluminium.
I really enjoyed the challenge of making something new. I like seeing beauty in the often overlooked little things.
I hope that these roses will tell a story of transformation, endurance and the unexpected. I also hope that it will contribute to a larger conversation about waste, consumption and our impact on the world.
What do you think?
